It is true that when we think about Athens, most likely the
first image to come to the minds is the popular historic Acropolis rock. The Acropolis
of Athens is not only one of the most popular acropolis in Greece but also
entire world. You trip cannot be complete with at least a short tour to the
site. This is a settlement built upon an area of elevated ground for defense
purpose. These kinds of citadels exist in many parts of the world and the
example being the ancient Rome.

The temples on the rock of Acropolis were built in the end
of fifth century BC. Many popular historic buildings such as Parthenon and the
Propylaia, the Erechtheion, and the temple of Athena Nike were made in same
period. These are some of the world’s most important historic buildings. The word
“acropolis” means highest point. Most of the cities in Greek had their
acropolis, these were built to use as shelter house during war times. In our modern
world this term refers specifically to Acropolis in Athens, which is a 156 meters
or 512 feet high limestone rock. Here are magnificent temples of Athenians.
Parthenon of Athens
Pathenon which is
located in the center of Acropolis was used for storage of blasting powder, (was
hit by cannon ball and destroyed by Venetians during 1687 war) the entrance was
a memorable gateway called as Propylaea. There is the Temple of Athena Nike in
the south of entrance, and at the eastern side of entrance is the temple called
Erechtheum. The temple of Athena Parthenos is located at the middle, this is
the Temple of Athena The Virgin. All these historic artefacts and statues are
now under the care of Acropolis museum situated near the Parthenon. Many tells that the palace was built in early
age for this they give some logics but there is no confirm evidence of
construction of the palace building on the top of the Acropolis in the earlier
ear, and it seems that palace have been built during the later building
constructions.
